Pierluigi Talenti – L’altro Brunello – the other Brunello
Andrea Gabbrielli’s new book, dedicated to one of the protagonists of the history of the Brunello wine.
If Biondi Santi embodies the epic and elitarian (I’m not sure this is a word, but I do know what you’re trying to get at here: perhaps the word culminating?) history of Brunello di Montalcino, Pierluigi Talenti is the methodical builder of the miracle of this wine, a miracle in terms of economy and image.
Pierluigi, Piero to his friends, was a very particular farmer and producer. A really grand “vignaiolo”, a very humane wine-maker and full of lust for life, a big player in the modern revival of Brunello.
His was one of the few voices which, full of prestige and authoritativeness, has always spoken up, ahead of the times and even confronted with the extraordinary overwhelming success of Brunello, never losing neither clearness of mind nor critical sense: - very rare qualities indeed, when everything goes in the right direction and going against the current is inconvenient. Andrea Gabbrielli, who met him, got to know him and was fascinated by the man, tells more striking episodes of a life spent on the soil and among the people.
In the “osteria”, the local pub, playing cards in the evening and choosing workmen, properties and grapevines; during the day, smoking thousands of cigarettes and using very few words, checking on the state of the company, touching the grapes and checking on the development in the cellars; dinner at home, because family is important. In the end he was taken by a heart attack which underestimated because of his strong will to work , but what remained was the satisfaction to have founded his own company. An interesting book with a flowing rhythm, to be read first all in one go and to be picked up later again and to better understand the many teachings full of human insight, the history of a man who grew up in the fields and among the grapevines, strong and rough, but always with a gentle smile and always thinking ahead, with an eye toward the future.
